MPFL reconstruction is a surgery in which a new medial patellofemoral ligament is created with tendon graft to stabilize the knee and help protect the joint from additional damage. It offers an excellent treatment option for people who have experienced more than one dislocation of patella over knee.

MPFL repair with Internal Brace for Patellar Dislocation

Recurrent patellar dislocation is a very common problem and traditionally MPFL reconstruction is done with the hamstring tendon, in this hamstring tendon is harvested and placed over the damaged MPFL. This causes morbidity of the donor site and also places an effectively dead tissue over the MPFL ligament which has to be protected during its period of recovery, healing and revascularization, this results in irritation, wound complications and muscle wasting. Now with the invention of internal brace surgeons all over the world are doing MPFL repair, the damaged MPFL ligament is repaired to the patella and the repair is protected by the double-bundle construct of the fiber tape internal brace. In this procedure, the soft tissue bulking and irritation is very less and the knee is mobilized immediately after the surgery resulting in less knee stiffness, no donor site morbidity and better outcomes.
